Vol. 2 Issue #1

Introduction to the January Issue
Welcome to the first issue of 2023!
I am thrilled to introduce a new medium for Starry Starry Kite. Enjoy the creativity and playfulness of Melissa Shaak’s stop action video, At the Gate. (You can find more of her work here.)
Then, paddle the white water rapids with Marie Lavendier’s The Do-Over, discover a box of newborn kittens in Wild Cats, and spread the word that Starry Starry Kite is open to all kinds of creative submissions.
Enjoy!

At the Gate
By Melissa Shaak
I filmed “At the Gate” at MFA Boston’s Japanese Zen Garden, using a stop-motion technique in which the movements of real people are made to appear like animation.
The Do-Over
By Marie Lavendier
We had never rafted before or really spent time in the Southwest. But there we were—a family paddling down the Green River in Utah. Christopher was 14 and Nicole 11. My husband, Paul, thirsty for some adventure, had signed us up for a 5-day multi-family journey with the reputable Sheri Griffith Expeditions.
Wild Cats
By Linda Castronovo
I was nine years old when we moved to the new cedar and glass house Mom and Jim designed to perch over an intermittent stream in Oklahoma. Floor to ceiling windows looked onto a covered wraparound deck into dense woods, a shady ten acres surrounded by cattle and pasture. Almost immediately, a fat orange tabby cat sauntered into our lives. She walked the deck as if she owned the place, welcoming us to her neighborhood.
