November 2022 Issue
Vol. 1 Issue #11 November 8, 2022
Introduction to the November Issue
Thank you to the many readers who reached out to me about my sister’s passing. Your comments, memories, and stories filled me with joy even when they prompted a few more tears. Beth was universally loved and admired. She touched many, many lives. I am happy to carry on her dream of Starry Starry Kite this month with two new poems and an essay.
Enjoy!

Without Words
By Mycelia C.
We walk without words through the near pasture
where Monarchs flit above flowers,
Larks build grass houses,
an old birch tree towers.
Your hard edge softens as you lift
a fallen bird’s nest, carry it tenderly, eyes brightening,
not thinking of your father dead three years
nor the rough road you have taken.
A Call to Arms: Aventuras en Las Sierras Guadarramas
By Stephanie Shafran
In the fall of 1971, at the outset of my junior year abroad as a student at Smith College, I had an unforgettable experience in Spain. It was on a mountain hike in the Sierra de Guadarrama mountain range near Madrid. The hike was organized for the group by our program director Charles, a Smith faculty member and outdoorsman.
As we gathered on that balmy, bright Saturday in October, I was feeling alienated from the other “Smithies,” who seemed so self-assured. I was in a particularly sullen mood for this first outdoor activity. Throughout the hike, I kept to myself, watching the other students talk and laugh as they climbed the trail. Once we reached the top of the mountain, I stopped to rest.
